[Plenary Session 2] The Korea-Soviet Summit and Jeju, Island of World Peace		 Grand Ballroom
2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the Korea-Soviet Summit held in Jeju. The Jeju summit not only contributed to the simultaneous entry of the two Koreas into the United Nations but also raised the hopes that the Cold War could end and peace could be built on the Korean peninsula. It also prompted a community-wide movement to designate Jeju as an "island of world peace." With the support of the people of Jeju Island from all walks of life, Jeju Island was officially designated as an "island of world peace" in 2005 by the Korean government in recognition of its contribution to the establishment of peace on the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia. At the upcoming 16th Jeju Forum, we would like to reflect on the significance of the Korea-Soviet Jeju summit and explore the direction and role of Jeju as an island of world peace in East Asia.

2021년은 한?소 정상회담이 제주에서 개최된 지 30주년이 되는 해이다. 한?소 정상회담은 한반도의 냉전 종식 및 평화 정착의 분위기를 형성했다는 데에 큰 의미가 있다.
한소정상회담을 계기로 제주도는 한일정상회담, 한미정상회담등 여러 정상회담과 평화 논의의 장으로서 역할을 해 왔다.
그 과정 속에서 제주도를 평화 논의의 장에서 나아가 ‘세계 평화의 섬’으로 지정하자는 움직임이 태동했다. 제주도민들의 지지와 각계 각층의 노력 끝에 2005년 제주는 한반도와 동북아시아 평화 정착에 기여한 그간의 노력을 인정받아 ‘세계 평화의 섬’으로서 지정되었다.
이번 세션에서는 한소정상회담의 의의를 돌아보고, 세계 평화의 섬으로서의 제주가 동아시아 지역안보협력 및 세계 평화를 위해 나아갈 방향과 역할에 대해 모색해보고자 한다.
