[Plenary Session 3] The Peaceful Ending of the Cold War: Interpretations and Lessons		 Grand Ballroom
Gorbachev visited Jeju in the spring of 1991 for a historic Soviet-South Korea summit; later that year, the Soviet Union disintegrated and the Cold War ended peacefully and unexpectedly. This session commemorates the 30th anniversary of the end of the Cold War. Building on thirty years of scholarship on Cold War history, it seeks to understand why the Cold War ended in Europe when it did and how it could end peacefully. Three renowned Cold War historians will distinguish myths from facts, identify the factors that contributed to the peaceful ending of the Cold War in Europe, and find ways to emulate these factors in Northeast Asia, where the Cold War has not still ended and a nuclear war is not out of the question.

1991년 봄 역사적인 한소정상회담을 위해 고르바쵸프 전 소련대통령이 제주도를 방문하였다. 그해 겨울 소련이 붕괴되었고, 냉전이 평화롭게 그리고 예상치 않게 종식되었다.
냉전 종식 30주년을 기념하는 본 세션에서는 냉전의 역사에 대해 진행해 온 지난 30년간의 학문적 연구를 바탕으로 냉전이 왜 유럽에서 그때 종식되었는지, 그리고 어떻게 평화적으로 종식될 수 있었는지에 대해 알아보고자 한다.
국제적으로 저명한 세명의 냉전사 권위자들이 협력하여 냉전종식을 둘러싼 오해와 진실을 밝히고, 유럽에서 평화적 냉전 종식에 기여한 요인들을 찾아 내어, 그러한 요인들을 냉전과 핵전쟁의 위협이 아직 끝나지 않은 동북아시아에서 재연할 수 있는 방법들에 대해 논의할 것이다.
