[Jeju Research Institute 제주연구원] As the number of tourists visiting the Jeju Island and the migration population from other regions increases steadily, we may expect that a total of one million people will reside in Jeju with the net population of 800,000 and the visitors of 200,000 in 2040. Jeju has been currently preparing policies for the era of 1 million population, including the improvement of traffic and settlement conditions to prevent indiscreet unsustainable development and to minimize the side effects caused by the rapid population expansion. In the future, Jeju will have to establish a policy to create a sustainable Jeju in all fields such as economy, industry, welfare, environment, society, and culture, etc. Therefore, we need to seek the potential direction of sustainable Jeju and feasible strategies to protect the livable Jeju in the future. 제주를 찾는 관광객과 외지인구 유입이 꾸준히 늘어나면서 2040년에는 제주인구 80만 명, 관광객 20만 명까지 총 100만 명이 제주에 상주할 것으로 예상됨. 현재 제주는 난개발을 제재하고 인구급증에 따른 부작용을 최소화하기 위해 교통·정주 여건을 개선하는 등 인구 100만 명 시대를 대비하고 있으며, 향후에는 경제·산업·복지·환경·사회·문화 등 모든 분야에서 지속가능한 제주를 만들어나가기 위한 정책을 수립해야 할 것임. 이에 미래에도 살기 좋은 제주를 지켜나갈 수 있도록 지속가능한 제주의 추진방향과 실현 가능한 전략을 모색함.
