김향자는 1987년 교통개발연구원에 입사하여 한국관광연구원과 한국문화관광연구원에서 32년간 재직 중에 있다. 김향자 원장직무대행은 연구원에 재직하는 동안 문화관광사업단장, 통계평가센터장, 관광연구본부장, 경영기획본부장 등 주요 임무를 맡아 연구원의 발전에 기여해 왔다. 김향자는 관광 전문가로서 지역관광 개발의 발전, 섬관광 활성화, 도시관광 및 도시재생 활성화 및 제주관광 진흥에 기여해 왔으며, 현재 대통령 직속 국가균형발전위원회 위원으로 지역의 균형발전에 진력하고 있다. 관련 연구로는 ‘지역관광자원개발 방향 연구 Ⅰ,Ⅱ’ 등이 있으며, 2018년 대통령상을 수상하였다.

Kim Hyangja and has been working for 32 years at Korea Tourism Organization and Korea Culture & Tourism Research Institute since joining the Korea Transportation Development Institute in 1987. During hers tenure at the Institute, Kim has contributed to the development of the Institute, including the executive director of planning and management group, the executive director of tourism research group, and the head of the statistical evaluation center.

As a tourism expert, Kim has contributed to the development of regional tourism development, revitalization of island tourism, revitalization of urban tourism, and Jeju Island tourism. Now she is a member of the Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development. Major researches include 'Research on the development of local tourism resources, Ⅰ and Ⅱ' and received the Presidential Award in 2018.
