The peace process on the Korean peninsula which started at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics is facing new challenges and opportunities with the inauguration of the Biden administration in the United States in 2021. At the same time, a series of the upcoming Olympics in three countries in Northeast Asia, namely, the delayed Tokyo Summer Olympics (July 2021), Beijing Winter Olympics (Feb. 2022) and Gangwon Youth Winter Olympics (Feb. 2024) pose another challenges and opportunities for public diplomacy on peace in South Korea.
The session aims at assessing the outcome of the 3 PyeongChang Peace Forums (PPFs) since 2019 in order to identify the tasks of public diplomacy on peace and olympics in the future. It also seeks the roles and prospects of public diplomacy on peace and olympics by a local government such as the PyeongChang municipality which is one of the co-organizers of the PPF.

2018년 평창 올림픽을 계기로 시작한 한반도 비핵화 평화 프로세스가 2021년 바이든 정부의 등장과 함께 새로운 국면에 맞이하였다. 코로나19로 인한 2020년 동경올림픽 연기와 무관중 개최 결정, 2022년 북경 동계 올림픽 개최를 둘러싼 인권논란, 2024년 강원 청소년 동계 올림픽 개최 등 동북아 3국에서의 연이은 올림픽 개최는 한반도 평화와 공공외교에 새로운 도전과 기회로 작용하고 있다.

본 세션은 이러한 환경 변화 속에서 2019년부터 2021년까지 3년간 개최된 평창평화포럼의 성과를 검토하고 올림픽과 평화 분야에서 한국 공공외교의 과제를 파악하고자 하며, 평창평화포럼 공동주최 기관인 평창군의 올림픽과 평화 분야 지자체 공공외교의 역할과 전망에 대해서도 함께 모색하고자 한다.
