Historical Reconciliation and the Future-oriented Korea-Japan Relationship		 201B

This session focuses on historical reconciliation to promote a better future relationship between Korea and Japan. Mutual understanding and cooperation among nations are required in global society for peaceful and prosperous coexistence. In East Asia, however, conflicts of historical interpretations among Korea, Japan and China act as a great barrier to mutual cooperation. In particular, a latent distrust which resulted from Japanese colonial rule has existed in the relationship between Korea and Japan. The distrust has intensified because of their different interpretations of history, aggravating the countries’ public opinions toward the other country. The past shackles the future. Scholars will seek ways to achieve historical reconciliation to reduce mutual distrust between the two nations.

국제화 시대에 국가 간 교류가 활발해지면서 상호 이해와 협력이 요구되고 있다. 하지만 동아시아 지역에서는 역사인식의 문제가 국가 간 협력관계를 증진하는데 있어서 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 근대 식민지 지배와 피지배의 관계에 있었던 한일 양국은 식민통치와 침략 등의 과거사 문제를 극복하고 협력 관계를 유지해 가기가 쉽지 않다. 과거사 문제로 양국 간 갈등과 대립이 반복되면서 국내 여론을 분열시키고 집단적인 반발을 가져왔기 때문에 일부이기는 하지만 혐한과 반일 정서가 심각한 문제가 되고 있다. 이러한 대립 관계를 극복하고 미래지향적인 한일관계를 구축하기 위해서는 역사화해가 어느 때보다 필요하다고 보고 전문가들의 논의를 통해 그 방안을 모색하고자 한다.
