 미-중 패권경쟁과 동아시아지역 평화
U.S.-China Strategic Competition and Implications for Regional Peace in East Asia		 Crystal Ballroom1·2
Notwithstanding the global economic downturn and security threats including nuclear proliferation and terrorism, East Asia has been pursuing prosperity through economic cooperation by virtue of geographic proximity. However, security issues such as rows over past history and territorial disputes have been obstacles in bringing about peace in East Asia. Moreover, with the US presidential election fast approaching, the strategic competition between China and the US, which bears a close resemblance to the Cold War, has been intensified in many areas. Worsening of the US-China relations has significantly increased tensions in the region as well as weighed heavily as a political and economic burden on neighboring countries in addition to the pandemic. Can the current problems in East Asia related with US-China strategic competition be resolved and peace in East Asia be established? This session will examine the flashpoints in East Asia arising from the US-China rivalry and look for ways to bring about peace and prosperity in the region.

세계적인 경제하강 기류, 핵 확산과 테러리즘 등의 안보위협 등에도 불구하고 동아시아는 지리적 인접성을 바탕으로 경제적 협력을 통해 번영을 추구해 왔다. 하지만 역사문제와 영토분쟁 등의 안보 문제들은 동아시아 평화 정착에 걸림돌이 되고 있다. 이에 더하여, 미국 대선을 앞두고 냉전을 방불케 하는 미-중 간의 전략 경쟁이 전방위적으로 확산되어 가고 있는 형세이다. 팬데믹에 더해 미-중 경쟁 심화가 역내 긴장감을 높이고 역내 국가들에게 정치적, 경제적 부담을 안겨주고 있다. 미-중 대립으로 인한 갈등과 위기 상황을 극복하고 동아시아에 평화가 정착될 수 있을까? 본 세션을 통해 미-중 갈등에서 비롯된 동아시아 내 쟁점들을 짚어보고 동아시아 지역의 평화와 번영을 이룩하기 위한 방안을 강구해본다.
