In an effort to make Jeju a “Carbon Free Island,” Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is pursuing a policy to alter every car in Jeju Island into electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. In 2012, the Province provided one hundred EVs for official use and has been concentrating its efforts to expand EVs to make Jeju a home for 2,366 electric cars now, which is 40% of the whole EVs of the country. The Province is planning to provide subsidies for four thousands EVs this year. In this session, J.B. Straubel, Co-founder and CTO of Tesla Motors will share his views on electric car industry and its prospects together with an advice on Jeju’s Carbon Free Island’ initiative.

제주도를 2030년까지 ‘탄소 없는 섬’으로 만들기 위해 제주특별자치도는 도내에서 운행하는 모든 차량을 전기차로 바꾸는 계획을 추진 중이다. 2012년 관용전기차 100대 보급을 시작으로 매년 민간 전기차 보급 확대를 위해 노력한 결과 현재 제주에는 국내 보급 전기차의 40%인 2,366대가 달리고 있으며 올해는 추가로 4,000대에 보조금을 지원할 계획이다. 이 세션에서는 미래 전기자동차 산업을 이끌고 있는 미국의 전기차 생산업체 테슬라 모터스의 공동창업자이자 최고기술책임자(CTO)인 J.B. 스트라우벨과 원희룡 제주특별자치도지사 대담을 통해 전기자동차 산업의 역사와 미래 전망, 제주도의 ‘탄소없는 섬’정책에 대한 평가와 조언을 들어본다
