FORUM

The 6th Jeju Forum evaluated the challenges and opportunities the rise of China and the reunification of the Korean peninsula will offer. The Forum also took note of the great potential of new growth on the basis of the Asian entrepreneurship. With this background, various programs on Korea-China economic cooperation are prepared. The contents of new standard and its perspectives were reviewed. New growth potential, creative industry, new leadership, the future of education and the role of women were also addressed. Peace and common prosperity on the Korean peninsula and East Asia through the promotion of mutual understanding was discussed. The cultural exchanges and fusion in East Asia was reviewed and we evaluated how it is promoting the sense of community among the Asian peoples. Various issues of peace in East Asia such as the resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem, historical reconciliation and maritime security are among the topics. The recent natural disaster of Japan was reviewed and among the related topics are how to deal with the climate change and natural disasters.

Inter-Korean exchanges are almost do not exist even though 60 years have passed since the separation of the two Koreas. The conclusion for unification on the Korean peninsula still seems distant, even though the two Koreas have kept talking about (their own respective) visions of unification. There are new variables. They include the recent nuclear weapon development and formation of a succession system for KIM Jung un. The possibility of North Korea’s collapse is raised along with the economic hardship in North Korea. If unification comes right now, how will neighboring countries in proximity to the peninsula respond? This session will discuss the influence of the unification of the two Koreas: will the unification contribute to peace and prosperity in East Asia? Will neighboring countries respond negatively with the emergence of a new and powerful Korea?

- If the two Koreas are united, what impacts will be made in international relations of East Asia?
- Will the reunification of the two Koreas be an opportunity for cooperation among neighboring countries?

한반도가 분단된 지 60여 년이 흘렀으나 아직도 남북한간 교류는 거의 단절된 상태입니다. 남북한은 제각기 통일에 대해 말은 아끼지 않고 있으나 가까운 시일내 한반도가 통일된다는 전망은 서지 않고 있습니다. 최근 북한의 핵개발과 3대 세습체제 추진으로 한반도에는 변화의 새로운 변수가 등장하였습니다. 북한의 어려운 경제난과 더불어 북한 붕괴 가능성에 대해서도 끊임없이 이야기되고 있습니다. 지금 당장 한반도의 통일 기회가 주어질 경우 주변국들의 반응을 점검해 봅니다. 한반도 통일이 동아시아 평화와 번영에 기여할 것인지 아니면 정치ㆍ경제적으로 강력한 통일국가의 출현에 대해 주변국들이 긴장할 것인지 등 한반도 통일이 가져올 동아시아 국제정세 변화도 논의합니다.
