The threats posed by climate change have been recognized as one of the most critical security challenges in terms of both traditional national security and human security which refers to the security of people and communities related to feeling safe, such as freedom from fear, freedom from want, and freedom from indignity. Climate change gives rise to more frequent and intense floods and droughts, storms, lack of drinking water and food, rising sea levels, which are formidable threats to the livelihoods of people. Climate disasters also drive displacement, where people can easily become refugees, undermining people’s security and well-being. Also, they can frequently get embroiled in conflicts over the allocation of resources. This can render adverse impacts on both human and national security in political, societal and economic aspects. Against this backdrop, the session organized by UNITAR CIFAL Jeju/JITC will explore the nexus of climate change and peace, and discuss how to analyze and understand the nexus for building sustainable peace along with the ways forward. |
