FORUM

The 6th Jeju Forum evaluated the challenges and opportunities the rise of China and the reunification of the Korean peninsula will offer. The Forum also took note of the great potential of new growth on the basis of the Asian entrepreneurship. With this background, various programs on Korea-China economic cooperation are prepared. The contents of new standard and its perspectives were reviewed. New growth potential, creative industry, new leadership, the future of education and the role of women were also addressed. Peace and common prosperity on the Korean peninsula and East Asia through the promotion of mutual understanding was discussed. The cultural exchanges and fusion in East Asia was reviewed and we evaluated how it is promoting the sense of community among the Asian peoples. Various issues of peace in East Asia such as the resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem, historical reconciliation and maritime security are among the topics. The recent natural disaster of Japan was reviewed and among the related topics are how to deal with the climate change and natural disasters.

The oceans are becoming ever more important to East Asia. The oceans around East Asia, which is home to a number of leading exporting/importing countries, are extremely important to the countries in the region, both in terms of economic and national security. At present, the various countries in the region are embroiled in conflicts with each other over territorial claims concerning many islands. A similar situation is occurring in the relations between the two Koreas. Furthermore, interest in the oceans - as expressed by China and traditional maritime nations such as the U.S. and Japan -
appears to be in high stakes. China’s recent buildup of its naval strength, including its plan to deploy an aircraft carrier in combatrelated duties, is emerging as a new factor in the region’s marine power mechanism.

동아시아 지역에서 해양의 중요성은 점점 더 커져가고 있습니다. 세계적인 수출입국가들이 집중되어 있는 동아시아 지역 해양은 역내 국가들에게 경제적으로나 안보적으로 매우 중요합니다. 현재 동아시아 국가 간의 해양에서의 갈등은 영토 분쟁과 경제적 이용 문제 등에서 끊임없이 발생하고 있습니다. 남북한 간의 무력충돌도 주로 해양에서 발생하고 있습니다. 전통적인 해양국가인 미국과 일본은 물론 최근 중국의 해양에 대한 관심도 뜨겁습니다. 가까운 시일 내 항공모함을 배치할 것으로 예상되고 있는 중국의 해군력 증강은 역내 해양 세력구도에 새로운 변수로 등장하였습니다. 향후 동아시아 해양안보 전망에 대해 전문가들이 토론합니다.
