[Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Korea Science Diplomacy Club 외교부 /한국과학기술외교클럽] In this session, we discuss the role and the contribution of the international scientific cooperation and science diplomacy to the peace and prosperity in East Asia, in particular, with a notable example of the Mt. Baek-du international research cooperation. Recently, science is becoming increasingly critical in complex international negotiations and addressing global challenges such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions, climate change, and other natural catastrophes. Moreover, in the age of the accelerating science and technology, science diplomacy is increasingly be- coming a central element of the public diplomacy and a soft power, and is emerging as an active area of study and policy considerations. we share the nature and the role of science diplomacy for enhancing cross-border cooperative activities despite challenging political environments. 이 세션에서는 국제 과학협력과 과학기술외교가 동북아의 평화와 번영에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가를 다룬다. 특히 최근 주목을 받고 있는 백두산 화산의 국제 공동연구를 중심으로 복잡한 국제 관계와 지진, 화산, 기후변화 등 재난의 글로벌 도전에 대응하는 데 있어 과학기술의 새로운 역할을 모색하고자 한다. 특히 과학기술의 발전과 가속화되는 시대의 변화에 과학기술외교는 공공외교와 소프트 파워의 핵심요소가 되고 있다. 도전적 정치환경에도 불구하고 국경을 넘는 협력을 증진할 수 있는 과학기술외교의 본질과 역할에 대해 논의할 것이다.
