아시아 국가들이 차차 코로나19 위기에서 벗어남에 따라 해당 지역에서의 인권문제를 개선하기 위한 논의가 다시금 주목받고 있다. 위구르족, 로힝야족과 같이 민족적 혹은 종교적 소수 집단은 극심한 차별에 시달리고 있으며 북한 주민들은 여타 지역에서 당연시 여겨지는 기본적인 권리조차 보장받지 못하고 있다. 탈레반 정권의 복귀로 아프가니스탄에서는 여성에 대한 구조적 억압이라는 문제가 제기되고 있고, LGBTQ+ 단체들은 아시아권역 내 동성애자에 대한 포용을 위한 투쟁이 전개되고 있다. 한편, 코로나 이후 강화된 감시체계로 인하여 '선진' 자유민주주의 국가에서 조차 개인의 자유가 보장받지 못하고 있다는 우려가 나오고 있다. 본 세션에서는 이러한 인권문제를 마주하며 다음과 같은 질문들을 던지고자 한다. 인간안보(human security)를 보장하고 정치적 자유를 확장하며, 더 나아가 인간의 번영을 증진시키기 위해 우리는 어떤 노력을 해야 하는가? 아시아인들은 더 정의로운 세상을 추구하기 위한 세계적 과제 해결에 어떻게 기여할 수 있는가?

As Asian countries emerge from the shadow of the Covid pandemic, the question of how to improve human rights across the region is reemerging with new salience. Ethnic and religious minorities such as the Uyghurs and Rohingya face severe discrimination, while North Koreans as a whole lack basic rights taken for granted elsewhere. The return to power of the Taliban poses questions about systemic oppression of women in Afghanistan, and LGBTQ+ groups are fighting for toleration in numerous Asian countries. Meanwhile, the boost to surveillance powers given by the pandemic has raised concerns about individual freedom even in 'advanced' liberal democracies. Facing a daunting list of human rights challenges, what can be done to ensure human security, expand political liberties, and enhance human flourishing? What do Asians have to contribute to the larger global quest for a more just world?
