The 13th Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity is to be held for three days from June 26 to 28 at 

the International Convention Center Jeju (in Seogwipo City, Jeju Island) in the main theme of 

“Reengineering Peace for Asia”. The Forum this year is expected to focus on discussing pragmatism to build 

peace on the Korean peninsula in the wake of the inter-Korean summit slated for Apr. 27 and the U.S.-North 

Korean summit talks in early May or June.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and 

former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will deliver keynote speeches at the opening ceremony on the 

morning of June 27.

This year’s Forum will be joined by three Nobel laureates. Paul Krugman, the 2008 Nobel Economics 

Prize winner and Professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, will give a lecture on 

the impacts of the global trade war on the security environment in Northeast Asia at the special session at 9-

10 a.m. on June 27. José Ramos Horta, the 1996 Nobel Peace laureate and former East Timor President, who 

had engaged in the East Timor independence movement and dedicated himself to peaceful resolutions 

of disputes over the world, will give a speech on the universal value of peace and human rights at the 

special session on the morning of June 28. Jean Marie Gustave Le Clézio, the winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize 

in Literature, will discuss his novel set in Jeju Island in a talk show session entitled ‘Jeju Island of peace 

and healing’ on the afternoon of June 28.

The Jeju Forum Secretariat will hold the inaugural meeting of the International Advisory 

Committee membered by twelve prominent domestic and international figures during the Forum. Founded for 

the purpose of deliberating on global issues and strengthening the Forum’s networking activities, the 

advisory committee will advise on the main theme of the Forum, recommend speakers and solicit their 

participationin the Forum. 

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Kim Dae Jung-Obuchi Future Partnership Declaration, 

the Forum organized a discussion session on how to promote friendly ties and cooperation between Korea 

and Japan. It will be joined by the legislators of the two countries, including Kang Chang-il, head of the 

Korean delegation to the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union, and Fukushiro Nukaga, his Japanese 

counterpart.

The Forum will also open diplomacy and security sessions to discuss Korea’s diplomatic issues such as 

New Southern Policy and Free Trade Agreement as well as the U.S.-China relations and other global affairs. 

Various sessions in the theme of Global Jeju are scheduled during the Forum. They include the Alliance 

of World Peace Cities sessions such as the Mayor for Peace conference among Pacific Rim Park Cities on 

June 26, and those on June 28 about the Apr. 3 Incident and international solidarity of women, as well as 

culture sessions on establishment of East Asian peace and art networks.

This year’s Jeju Forum, joined by forty-three organizations, holds four plenary and sixty-six parallel 

sessions, divided into five categories: peace, prosperity, sustainability, diversity and global Jeju, in addition to 

auxiliary programs such as the roundtable of business entrepreneurs.

The Jeju Forum is co-hosted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the International Peace 

Foundation, the East Asia Foundation, and the Joongang Ilbo. It is organized by the Jeju Peace Institute 

(President Suh Chung-ha) and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Jeju Free International City 

Development Center.
