Tadatoshi Akiba , Co-Chair of Hiroshima Council Against A & H Bombs, is Former Mayor of Hiroshima City between 1999 and 2011 and a former member of the Japanese National Congress from 1990 to 1999.

He holds a Ph.D. from MIT and taught at SUNY, Tufts University, Hiroshima University and others.

During the 1980’s he created and managed the Akiba Project inviing international journalists to Hiroshima and Nagasaki to help the world understand the realities of the atomic bombings and the message of hibakusha better.

As a Diet member he was a strong advocate of civil society’s voices concerning international matters with special emphasis on peace and nuclear weapons related issues. While Mayor of Hiroshima he lead Mayors for Peace, an organization of international mayors, and increased its membership from around 400 cities and mayors to approximately 5,000. From 2011 through 2014, he served as Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative (MPI), umbrella organization of international peace NGO’s and President of AFS Japan.

He also received such awards as the Ramon Magsaysay Award (also known as the Asian Nobel Prize) and Otto Hahn Peace Medal in God from the UN Association of Gemany (first Asian recipient).


원수폭금지 히로시마협의회 공동대표이며, 1990년부터 1999년까지 히로시마를 대변하는 국회 의원직을 수행했다. 1999년 히로시마 시장에 당선돼 2011년까지 3차례 연임했다. 평화를 위한 시장으로서, 그의 재임 기간 동안 440여명의 회원들에서 약 5,000명으로 성장하는데 도움을 주었다.

2011년부터 2014년까지 MPI 의장, AFS저팬 사장, 히로시마 대학 교수 등을 역임했다.
StonyBrook, TuftsUniversity, 히로시마 ShudoUniversity, 히로시마 University에서 강의했다.
국제 평화상, 캘거리 평화상 제1회 상, 라몬 마사이사이 상, 진 메이어 국제 시민 상(2011년), 장 메이어 국제 시민 상(2011년)을 수여했으며, [핵 시대 평화 재단]에서 수여하는 권위 있는 평화 리더십상(2011년), [그리스도 국제 평화 공동체상](2012년), [독일-베를린 국제 연합]에서 수여하는 오토 한 평화 메달 수여했다.
출판물은 펄과 체리 나무, 얼굴이 있는 컴퓨터(컴퓨터 사용 기간), 히로시마:보복 대신 위협의 도시(카이메이샤)와 히로시마 시장(2011년 아사히 신문) 화해(2015년 이와나미 쇼텐)가 있다.
