마리아 카스티요 페르난데즈 주한 유럽연합(EU) 대사 지명자는 스페인 국적의 유럽 외교관/관리로서 2016-2020년 주말레이시아 EU 대사를 지냈다. 이에 앞서 2012년 9월부터 말레이시아 부임 전까지는 유럽대외관계청(EEAS)에서 EU와 인도, 네팔, 부탄 및 방글라데시, 그리고 남아시아지역협력연합(SAARC)과의 전반적인 관계 관리 및 조율을 총괄하는 부문의 국장을 역임했다. 2008년에서 2012년 9월까지는 홍콩과 마카오 특별행정구를 관할하는 EU 대표사무소의 수장으로 홍콩에서 활동했다. 2005년 9월에서 2008년까지는 주한 EU 대표부에서 EU와 남북간 정치관계 및 경제협력 사안을 책임지는 공관 차석을 지냈다. 한국에 부임하기 전, 2000년에서 2005년까지는 벨기에 브뤼셀에서 유럽집행위원회와 대한민국, 그리고 북한과의 관계 전반을 담당했다. 카스티요 페르난데즈 대사 지명자는 스페인 마드리드 자치대학교(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid)에서 법학을 전공했으며, 대학원에서 유럽법, 경제학 및 국제관계학을 수학한 뒤 벨기에 브뤼헤에 소재한 유럽대학교(College of Europe)와 프랑스 스트라스부르에 위치한 유럽학연구소(Institute of European Studies)에서 석사 학위를 취득했다. 카스티요 페르난데즈 대사 지명자는 EU와 남북간 관계 강화에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 2008년 6월 24일 스페인 국왕으로부터 시민훈장(Cruz de Oficial de la Orden del Mérito Civil)을 수여받았다.

Maria CASTILLO FERNANDEZ, European diplomat/official of Spanish nationality, now Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea, previously EU Ambassador in Malaysia from 2016-2020, Head of Division for India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh since September 2012 at the European External Action Service of the European Union, in charge of managing and coordinating the European Union's overall relations with these South Asian countries as well as with the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). From 2008 to September 2012, posted in Hong Kong, representing the EU as the Head of the Office of the European Union accredited to Hong Kong and Macao SARs. From September 2005-2008, she worked as Deputy Head of Mission at the EU Delegation in Seoul (Republic of Korea) in charge of EU political relations and economic cooperation activities with the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Prior to this, Ms Castillo was responsible, in Brussels, for the European Commission’s overall relations with the Korean Peninsula, including both Republic of Korea and DPRK (2000-2005). Ms Castillo completed postgraduate studies in European law, economics and international relations with two masters, one at the College of Europe (Bruges, Belgium) and a second at the Institute of European Studies (Strasbourg, France) following a degree in law from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). Ms Castillo was decorated with the Cruz de Oficial de la Orden del Mérito Civil by the King of Spain on 24 June 2008 for strengthening relations between the EU and the Korean Peninsula.
