김종화는 현재 제주한라대학교 지능형시스템공학과 교수로 재직 중이고, 2016~2019년에는 과학기술연합대학원 대학교(UST)에서, 2002~2016까지는 독일 아욱스부르크대학교 컴퓨터과학 교수로 재직했다. 학문 및 연구 분야는 인공감성지능과 바이오기반 계산인공지능을 포함하며 다수의 권위 있는 톱-인용 저널 논문 트랙을 보유하고 있다. 독일 대학 재직 시 HUMAINE, CALLAS, CEEDS 및 METABO와 같은 EU-IST 다국적 프로젝트에서 다수의 다학적 국제연구팀들을 성공적으로 이끌었으며, 현재는 ICT, AI, 산업디자인, e-모빌리티, 생명과학 등 관련 7개 연구소로 구성된 융합연구기관인 미래문화기술연구단(FCTRI) 단장을 역임하고 있다. 김종화 교수는 2003년 독일 베를린공대에서 정보통신공학 박사 학위를, 2010년 독일 아욱스부르크대학에서 컴퓨터과학 하빌리타치온(Habilitation) 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 MDPI 저널 SIGNALS의 부편집장을 맡고 있다.

Jonghwa KIM is a full professor of Intelligent Systems Engineering at the Cheju Halla University. In 2016-2019, he was a professor of Computer Science at the University of Science and Technology in Daejeon, Korea and in 2002-2016 at the University of Augsburg, Germany. He is a specialist in artificial emotional intelligence and bio-inspired computational intelligence with strong record of the most highly-cited papers in the area. He led a number of international research teams in EU IST projects such as HUMAINE, CALLAS, CEEDS and METABO. He is a Chief Director of Future Culture & Technology Research Initiative (FCTRI) consisting of seven top-level interdisciplinary research centers specialized in ICT, AI, industrial design, e-mobility and life science. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Communication Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany in 2003, and his Habilitation Dr. degree in Computer Science from the University of Augsburg in 2010. He is serving as the associate editor-in-chief of the MDPI journal SIGNALS.
