성균관대 정치외교학과 교수, 성균중국연구소장, 한국정치학회 부회장으로 있다. 주요한 연구 분야는 중국정치와 외교, 동아시아 국제관계 등이다. 현대중국학회 회장을 역임했다. 정부활동으로는 청와대 남북정상회담 자문위원, 외교부·통일부·서울시·경기도 등의 정책자문위원으로 있다. 사회활동으로는 세종연구소, 동북아역사재단, 한중우호협회 이사로 있다. 해외에서는 중국의 지린대학, 화교대학 등의 객좌교수이며, 퉁지대학, 텐진외국어대, 수도사범대학 등의 겸직교수이다. 또한 <당대한국>, <동북아논단>, <북경대 정치학평론> 등 중국 유력학술잡지의 해외 편집위원이다. 일본나고야대학 특임교수, 워싱턴대 방문교수, 중국해양대학 강의교수를 역임했고, 저서로는 <중국의 국가대전략 연구>, <The Search for Good democracy in Asia> 등이 있고, 2017년 NEAR학술상을 수상했다.

He currently serves as a Professor of Political Science at Sungkyunkwan Univ. and vice president of the Korean Political Science Association. In academia, he served as President of the Korean Association of Contemporary China Studies and an advisor to the inter-Korean summit at Blue House, a policy advisor to the MOFA, the Ministry of Unification, Seoul City and Gyeonggi-Do. He is a board member of the Sejong Institute and the Northeast Asian History Foundation. And he is a chair and professor at Jilin Univ., Tongji Univ. etc. He has served as a special inviting professor at Nagoya University, a visiting scholar at University of Washington. He has published 50 books and book chapter. He won the 2017 Academic Award from NEAR Foundation.
