고동완은 1963년 제주 출생으로 성균관대학교에서 학부, 석사 및 박사과정을 수학하고, 미국 일리노이대학교(UIUC) 박사 후 연구원을 거쳐 2001년부터 경기대학교 관광개발학과에서 지역관광개발 등을 강의 및 연구하고 있다. 2011년부터 관광종합연구소 소장을 맡아 현재 한국연구재단의 ‘지역사회 기반형 관광개발’ 연구(6년 과제)를 수행하고 있다. 한국관광학회 부회장과 문화체육관광부, 국토교통부 등 다수의 중앙부처와 지방정부의 심의 또는 자문위원, 제주도 경관위원회 위원장을 역임하였다. 지역주민에게 더 관심을 가지고 진보적 관광학자의 길을 진력하고 있으며, ‘포스트모던 관광의 이해와 연구(2008)’ 등 3편의 저서와 약 90여 편의 연구논문을 발표하였다.

Born in Jeju in 1963, Dongwan Ko studied undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs at Sungkyunkwan University, worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois (UIUC), and has been teaching and researching regional tourism development at the Department of Tourism Development at Kyonggi University since 2001. Since 2011, he has been the director of the Tourism Research Institute and is currently conducting research on “community-based tourism development” (6 year project) of the National Research Foundation of Korea. He has served as a deliberation or advisory committee member of a number of central ministries and local governments including the Korea Tourism Association, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the chairman of the Jeju Island Landscape Committee. With more interest in local residents, he is advancing his path to becoming a progressive tourism scholar. He has published 3 books and about 90 research papers, including "Understanding and Research of Postmodern Tourism (2008)".
