신범철 박사는 현재 경제사회연구원 외교안보센터장으로 근무하고 있다. 신 박사는 국방부와 외교부의 주요 보직을 역임하였고 산하 연구 및 교육 기관에서 한반도를 둘러싼 외교안보 문제를 담당해왔다. 1995년 국방연구원에서 연구활동을 시작한 이래 국방연구원 국방정책연구실장(2008), 국방현안연구팀장(2009), 북한군사연구실장(2011-13.6) 등을 역임하였고, 국방부장관 정책보좌관(2009-10)과 외교부 정책기획관(2013-16)을 역임하며 정부현안을 다루었다. 이후 국립외교원 교수로서 외교관 양성에도 힘을 기울였다. 그밖에도 청와대 국가위기관리실, 국회 외통위, 국방부, 한미연합사령부 등의 자문위원으로 활동하였다. 신범철 박사는 충남대학교 법과대학 사법학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사를, 서울대학교 대학원 법학과에서 국제법 박사과정을 수료하였고, 미국 조지타운대학교에서 군사력 사용(use of force)을 주제로 박사학위를 취득하였다.

Dr. SHIN, Beomchul is the Director of Diplomacy and Security Center at the Research Institute for Economy and Society (RIES). Before Dr. SHIN joined the RIES, he worked at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Until March 2018, he served at the Korea National Diplomatic Academy as tenured professor. He also served for the ROK Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director-General for Policy Planning from 2013 to 2016. Before he joined the Ministry, he was the Head of the North Korean Military Studies Research Division at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses. Prior to that, he worked very closely with the Minister of National Defense of Korea as the Senior Policy Advisor in 2009 and 2010. He also has served in many advisory positions both at the National Security Council at the Office of the President and the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee. He received his S.J.D.(Doctor of Judicial Science) from Georgetown University Law Center in 2007
