서울대학교 외교학과를 졸업하고 미국 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign에서 정치학 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 세종연구소 연구소장을 맡고 있으며, 한국핵정책학회 회장으로 활동하고 있다. 한국핵물질관리학회 이사, 동아시아연구원 국가안보패널 위원, 핵비확산 및 군축을 위한 아태리더십 네트워크 멤버 등으로 활동하고 있다. 한국국방연구원 연구원, 외교통상부 정책기획관, 스웨덴 스톡홀름 안보개발정책연구소 (ISDP) 객원연구원, 워싱턴 DC, Stimson Center 방문연구원 등을 역임했다. 최근 주요 논저로는 『신국제질서와 한국외교전략』 (2021, 공저), 『신외교안보 방정식: 네트워크 경쟁과 전략문화』(2020, 공저), 『국가정체성과 한중일 관계』 (2020, 공저), 『미중 패권경쟁과 한반도』(2020) 등이 있다.

"Sang Hyun Lee is the president of the Sejong Institute and the Korea Nuclear Policy Society. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Seoul National University and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999.
He was a policy advisor for Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Unification, and Ministry of National Defense. He served as Director-General for Policy Planning from May 2011 to April 2013. He has been a visiting scholar at Institute for Development and Security in Stockholm and Stimson Center in Washington DC.
His recent publications include “Prospects for the Biden Administration’s Foreign Policy” (2021) and South Korea’s Foreign Policy in the Era of U.S.-China Strategic Competition (2020, co-authored)."
