김창욱은 제주에서 태어나 고려대학교 국문과를 졸업하고 1976년 동양방송(TBS) 다큐멘터리 제작 프로듀서로 언론계에 발을 디뎠다. 1980년 중앙일보에 입사해 사회부, 수도권 부장, 시사지 '월간중앙' 국장, 뉴욕 중앙일보 편집국장 등을 역임했다. 2004년부터 2009년까지 뉴욕 중앙일보 사장으로 활동했다. 2010년부터 International Internship Agency 'Challenge USA 21'을 운영하고 있으며, 2017년부터는 KBTV(KBS AMERICA) 전무이사로 활동하고 있다. 1979년 한국방송대상 국무총리상, 1981년과 1983년 중앙일보 창간유공사원 공로상을, 1990년 중앙일보 특종상을 수상했다. 1991년에는 한미-문화교류 지역사회 발전에 기여한 공로로 뉴욕주 나소카운티장 공로상을 수상했으며, 2021년에는 제주4·3 인권 심포지엄 개최 공로로 제주도문화상의 영예를 안았다. 4·3의 아픈 역사의 배경과 진실을 미국사회에 바로 알리는데 기여했으며, 1999년부터 재미제주도민회 활동에 참여하여 회장과 이사장을 역임하는 등 뉴욕과 뉴저지 거주 제주도민 친목과 단결에 헌신적인 노력을 했다.

Born in Jeju Island, Kim graduated from Korea University in Korean literature and entered the TBS documentaries as a producer, 1976. He joined the Joong Ang Ilbo in 1980 and served as head of the Social Affairs Department, Seoul Metropolitan Department, director of the ‘Monthly Joong Ang Ilbo’, and editor-in-chief of the Joong Ang Ilbo in New York. He also served as a CEO of the JoongAng Ilbo, New York, from 2004 to 2009. He has been running the International Internship Agency 'Challenge USA 21' since 2010 and has been working as a managing director of KBTV (KBS AMERICA) since 2017. He won the Prime Minister's Award at the Korea Broadcasting Awards in 1979, the JoongAng Ilbo's inaugural-members’ award in 1981 and 1983, and the JoongAng Ilbo's Exclusive News Award in 1990.
In 1991, he was awarded the Nassau County-New York Award for his contribution to the community, by developing the Korea-U.S. cultural exchange.
and in 2021, he won the Jeju Island Cultural Award for his contribution to the April 3rd Human Rights Symposium. He has contributed to informing U.S. society, about the sad background and truth of the April 3rd history, and has served as chairman of Jeju residents in New York and New Jersey since 1999.
