Amb. Sangki Chung (丁相基) had been a career diplomat for 36 years. He had worked in the Korean Embassy in Taipei, Singapore, China, Japan, San Francisco (as a Consul-General), Korean Mission in Taipei (as a Representative). He was the first Korean diplomat sent to Beijing in 1990 to open the Korean Representative Office before Korea established diplomatic relations with China.
At home, he had worked as a Director of Northeast Asia Division 2, Director-General of Asia and Pacific Affairs Bureau, Deputy Secretary of Protocol to the President of ROK, President of the National Institute for the International Education (Ministry of Education), Ambassador for Northeast Asian Regional Cooperation.
Currently he is a Distinguished Professor of Konkuk University in Korea. He is an advisor to the Korean - Chinese Association of Social Science Studies.
He accompanied President Kim Dae-joong to North Korea as a member of delegation of the historic Inter-Korea Summit in June 2000. He was a fellow of International Visitors Program of the State Department of USA in 2003.
He was selected as the “Most Outstanding Consul-General of the Year 2006” by the Overseas Korean Newspaper, and as one of five best Ambassadors by World Koreanet in 2012.
Ambassador Chung studied in the Konkuk University (BA), Chinese Cultural University (MA), and received Ph.D. (Politics) from Konkuk University.
He speaks fluent Chinese, and Japanese.
He has taken current position since June 2015.

정상기 대사는 직업외교관 출신으로 2015.6 월부터 국립외교원 중국연구센터 소장의 직책을 맡고 있다. 그는 중국, 대만, 싱가포르등 중화권 공관과 일본에서 근무하였으며, 주샌프란시스코 총영사, 주타이뻬이 한국대표를 역임하였다. 그는 1990 년 한국외교관으로서는 처음으로 북경에 파견되어 주북경 한국대표부를 개설하였고 그후 한.중 수교 교섭에 참가 하였다.
본부에서는 동북아 2과장, 대통령 비서실 행정관(국장급), 아시아태평양국장을 역임하였으며, 교육부 산하 국립국제교육원장, 외교부 동북아협력대사를 역임하였다.
그는 2000 년 제 1차 남북한정상회담에 참가하였으며, 2003 년 미 국무성의 국제방문학자로 초청받기도 하였다. 현재 건국대학교 석좌교수를 겸임하고 있다.
재외동포신문과 월드코리어넷 신문사에 의해 각각 베스트 공관장으로 선정된바 있다.
학력으로는 건국대학교 정치외교학과 (학사), 중국문화대학 정치학 (석사), 건국대학교에서 미-중관계로 정치학박사학위를 취득하였다.
