Amb. Chung Hae Moon has retired from the Foreign Services of the Republic of Korea in 2011 after 34 years of the distinguished career that spanned four different continents, including East Asia, North America, Europe and Africa. His ambassadorial posting to Greece during the 2004 Athens’ Olympics has inspired him to learn more about the Olympic Movement and the Cultural Olympiad. His interest in the values and spirit the Olympics represents remains unabated. His ambassadorship to Thailand coincided with the Kingdom’s assumption of the ASEAN Chair in 2009, a pivotal year that witnessed the first ever Korea-ASEAN Commemorative Summit held in Jeju, Korea, celebrating the twenties’ anniversary of the dialogue partnership between Korea and ASEAN.
Amb. Chung’s appointment as Secretary General of the ASEAN-Korea Centre in March 2012 provided a vigorous leadership for the Centre to expand the scope of activities and programs, including bringing the Korea-Mekong cooperation to the forefront of the Centre’s agendas.
Amb. Chung has since then engaged in a variety of activities to share his experience and knowledge with the society as a whole. He taught as a visiting professor at the Graduate Institute of Peace Studies, Kyung Hee University and also lectured at the Seoul National University, offering his perspectives on the Southeast Asia and the world. In addition, he worked as a member of policy advisory committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Furthermore, his extensive experiences in dealing with regional security challenges have entitled him to continuously represent the Republic of Korea at the Meetings of the ARF Experts and Eminent Persons since March 2016. His sharp interest and broad perspective in various global affairs enabled him to write a regular column for the Seoul Shinmun for almost two years, beginning July 2013.
Prior to his departure from the Korean diplomatic service, Amb Chung’s other diplomatic stints home and abroad included Deputy DG of Regional Trade Bureau, and postings in Korean embassies in Washington D. C., USA, Singapore, Nigeria and Austria.
He graduated from the Seoul National University Feb 1976, where he has obtained BA degree on international economics.

서울대 국제경제학과를 졸업하고 1976년 외교부 입부, 동남아과장, 총무과장, 지역통상국심의관으로 일했으며 싱가포르, 나이지리아, 미국, 오스트리아의 우리 대사관에서 근무하였다. 그 후 주그리스대사(2004-2006), 주태국대사(2009-2011), 한.아세안센터 사무총장(2012-2015)을 역임하였다. 2011년 말 퇴임 후 경희대학교 평화복지대학원과 서울대학교 정치외교학부에서 강의하였으며 서울신문 칼럼니스트로, 외교부 및 인사혁신처 정책자문위원으로 활동하였다. 현재는 아세안지역안보포럼(ASEAN　Regional Forum) 전문가 그룹 한국 대표, 민주평통 자문위원, 신남방정책특위 민간자문위원으로 활동하고 있다.
