He was born in 1959 in Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. He graduated from Seoul National University's College of Education and earned his master's and doctorate degrees from the same graduate school of sociology. From 2005 to 2009, he served as a standing member of the Committee for the Settlement of Past History for Truth and Reconciliation. In 2004, he was selected as the "100 People Who Will Open Korea's Future," won the 20th Danjae Prize in 2006 and the 15th Song Geon-ho Media Award in 2016. He is currently a professor of social science at Sungkonghoe University, dean of NGO graduate school at the same university, and director of the Association for the Commemoration of the Democratic Movement-Korea Institute of Democracy
The books include "The Social Movement of the 1960s," "The Study of Korean Social Workers," "New Search for Korean Social Sciences," "Division and Society," "War and Society. "War and Society" was selected as the "Korean Book 100" by the organizing committee of the guest countries of Frankfurt Book Fair in 2005.Translated and introduced in German and English and Japanese.

1959년 경북 영주에서 태어났다. 서울대학교 사범대학을 졸업하고, 같은 학교 사회학과 대학원에서 석사 및 박사학위를 받았다. 2005년부터 2009년까지 ‘진실화해를 위한 과거사정리위원회’ 상임위원으로 활동했으며 2004년 『한겨레』 선정 ‘한국의 미래를 열어갈 100인’으로 뽑혔고, 2006년 제20회 단재상을, 2016년 제15회 송건호 언론상을 수상했다. 현재 성공회대 사회과학부 교수, 같은 대학 NGO 대학원장 및 민주화운동기념사업회 한국민주주의연구소 소장으로 재직중이다.
지은 책으로 『1960년대의 사회운동』 『한국 사회 노동자 연구』 『한국 사회과학의 새로운 모색』 『분단과 한국 사회』 『전쟁과 사회』 『전쟁과 사회』는 2005년 프랑크푸르트 도서전 주빈국 조직위원회 선정 ‘한국의 책 100’으로 뽑혔으며, 독일어.영어.일본어로 번역, 소개되었다.
