Ambassador Im Hong-Jae is currently Vice-President and Secretary-General of the United Nations Global Compact Korea Network. Before his retirement from 33-year of diplomatic career in 2010, Secretary-General Im served as Korean Ambassador to Iraq, Iran and Vietnam for approximately six years. Prior to his tour as ambassador, he served as Director-General of the International Economic Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT), Counsellor at the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and the Korean Delegation to the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Earlier in his career Secretary-General Im was also Consul at the Korean Consulate General in New York, First Secretary at the Korean Embassy in the Kingdom of Thailand, and Counsellor at the Korean Embassy in the Republic of Costa Rica. Secretary-General Im received his bachelor degree in English Language and Literature from Seoul National University, and read International Relations at the University of Oxford.

임홍재 전직 대사는 1977년 외교부에 입부한 후 뉴욕, 태국, 코스타리카, 유엔대표부, OECD 대표부에서 근무한 후에 주 이라크, 이란, 베트남 대사를 역임했고, 본부에서는 APEC 심의관, 국제경제심의관, 한국국제협력단(KOICA) 이사, 국회 통일외교통상위원회 전문위원, 외교부 국제경제국장직을 수행했다.

임 대사는 외교부에서 33년 간 근무한 후 2010년 정년퇴직했고 그 후 3년간 청주대학교에서 초빙교수로 외교와 협상을 강의하였다. 현재 유엔글로벌콤팩트(United Nations Global Compact)의 한국협회 사무총장직으로 재직하고 있다. UNGC는 우리기업이 인권, 노동, 환경, 반부패 등에서 유엔이 권하는 가치와 원칙을 준수하면서 사회적 책임(CSR)과 윤리경영을 하도록 돕는 유엔의 자발적 운동이다.

임홍재 전 대사는 서울대 영문학과를 졸업했고, 영국옥스퍼드대학교에서 1년 간 외교관과정을 이수했다.
