김상연은 대한민국 출생으로 1995년 서울신문사에 입사해 사회부, 경제부, 정치부, 워싱턴특파원 등 일선 취재 기자를 거쳐 현재 정치부장으로서 한국 정치와 남북관계 등 외교안보 관련 뉴스 보도를 책임지고 있다. 제1차 남북 이산가족 상봉 평양 현지 취재, 개성공단 현지 취재, 금강산 관광 현지 취재, 이라크전쟁 한국군 파병부대 종군 취재, 일본 오키나와 미군기지 현지 취재, 쿠바 관타나모 미국 포로수용소 현지 취재 경험이 있으며, 대한민국의 3차례 대통령선거, 3차례 국회의원 선거, 3차례 지방선거와 미국의 2차례 대통령 선거를 취재했다.
특히 지난해 한반도 해빙무드 이후 지금까지 3차례 남북정상회담과 2차례 북미정상회담 취재를 지휘했다.
